Travelling: Madrid Inside

Not many European capitals can claim a historical path as long and complicated as one of Madrid. The city hosted many cultures and nations, glory moments and days of decline.  Once used to be the most powerful and rules dictating city of the world, Madrid presents now a complex mixture of the remaining past and the welcomed future. The diversity as bright as Spanish mosaic is clearly seen on the streets of the capital of la España.
Remains of the past are to be occasionally walked into all around the city. Exquisitely designed buildings represent the best of the architectural skills and excellences of the previous centuries. Alongside with them harmonically fitting into the picture stands modern architecture “born” by the financial boom of few years ago. Exploring the city’s past one can’t neglect Prado museum hosting the finest and one of the biggest art collection in the world. Reina Sofia Museum showcases contemporary art with a permanent exposition dedicated to the crown of Spanish art of 20st century – Picasso’s Guernica.

However nowhere in the city one can find as much fusion of novelty with constantly revoking past as in the people, madrileños. The past and the presence are boiling together in the ever heart of Spain taking a shape of continuously supported traditions with a new twist.  Siesta is valued not less than hundreds years go, but now it’s spent in the fashionable shops and fancy restaurants of Barrio de Salamanca. Food remains an unquestionably big part of Spanish life, however now madrileños prefer to gather in the little cosy tapas places multiply spread around the markets in la Latina district.  Wine will always be the beloved drink, yet now it’s surrounding under the growing popularity of gin & tonic. Passion, desire, love, hate, desperation are expressed in the overwhelming flamenco dance, though now it’s danced in jeans.
The city retains the essence constantly renewing its form. Madrid is a definite must on a list of every traveller and life lover.

Reina Sofia.

  3. what a great story about that fabulous city. I haven't been to Madrid but I'd certainly love to go there someday. too bad I have to spend most of my days at work. I think 28 vacation days is clearly a too small number! btw, what do you do for living? :) oh, and your photos are awesome!
